Trans fat is a type of fat found naturally in many foods (e.g., beef, butter). Trans fat is also formed during the hydrogenation process of liquid oils and found in many of the ingredients that are used in baking, frying and cooking, such as shortenings and oils.
Trans fats are formed during the hydrogenation process of the oil. Hydrogenation, the hardening of liquid oils, gives foods a more desirable texture. It is not possible to bake many products with just liquid oil. For example, pie crust, biscuits, pastries and croissants cannot be made without some hard/solid oil. In addition, hydrogenation can help foods stay fresh longer.
Recent studies have concluded that trans fats are similar to saturated fat in their effect on blood cholesterol. Some consumption of trans fats is unavoidable in ordinary diets. Many experts recommend that trans fat consumption be “as low as possible.”
Per serving, all Gold ’n Soft Vegetable Oil Spreads are trans fat-free and cholesterol-free (0g trans fat/0mg cholesterol per serving) and contain less than half the saturated fat of butter (see comparison chart below). Per serving, our Spreadable Butters are also trans fat-free and contain 50% less cholesterol than butter (15mg per serving vs. 30mg in butter). The American Heart Association continues to recommend vegetable oil-based soft spreads over butter.* For more nutrition facts, please see the Products section of this site.
